Our partner clinician of SENDoc team at Ulster - M.D. Philip Gardiner, Consultant Rheumatologist and a General Physician with Altnagelvin Hospital, Londonderry/Derry - attended the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) Conference hold in Brussels on 9th October 2018. This year's conference was entitled: "Bringing Chronic Diseases to the Forefront of health Innovation: From the front to individualised health care". On this conference Philip provided an example of how the progress of technology, specifically Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors in combination with an App, can help to manage and monitor rheumatism from both the physiotherapist and patients's viewpoints. The first stage of this research shows that sensors can provide reliable measurements as a composite score of the spinal movement (cervical and lumbar regions) and can replace the previous BASMI method.
